But static analysis only covers the surface of compatibility problems. What about those custom actions often used in setups? They can execute ANYTHING you don't know about in the installation process whon only using the static analysis approach! To be sure you capture all those compatibility and furthermore interoperability issues, you have to use a dynamic testing approach including really executing the setup phase of your applications.

Maybe for you as a speaker the event is free, but unfortunately not for the normal visitors. It would have cost me 299 euro at minimum, to attend the event. However, GeekNight was free - and that one I attended.

I think your best bet would be to speak to the software vendor. You could uninstall the patch but this isn't recommended as your system may be vulnerable to attack as described in the URL above.
ChangeBASE AOK has a module called 'Manage-It' which can scan Microsoft patches and check if there will be issues such as this with your existing app estate before you deploy the patches. It's a great tool to prevent this sort of issue from occurring.

Greg, are you familiar with UniBrows? Runs IE6 natively inside IE8. We agree virtualizing all of Windows to run IE6 is a mistake. Cracking an egg with a sledgehammer is how customers often position it to us.

One of the MS hotfixes patched mfc42.dll, and this change has broken one of our old applications. And given that the application involves explorer extensions, it causes the windows explorer to appear to hang.

I have done some debugging - it seems to be related to changes that MS made to the CArchive class.

What I want to know is who do I contact about this? MS doesn't seem to want to make it easy for people to report these types of compatibility problems.

Regarding your understanding of the 'layer' concept,I too presumed this would be the case just like Symantec's SWV and asked this same question of Microsoft here: http://blogs.technet.com/b/serverappv/archive/2011/03/25/welcome-to-server-application-virtualization.aspx but as you see the application is still isolated far more than just a layer and is contained within a bubble. The bubble is launched using Powershell cmdlets. I have installed and played with the Beta. I just had a 4.6 class and asked the customer (which were quite large in terms of number of applications) - which applications uses COM+?

Unfortunately they had never identified one and even though trying quite a few of their non-common (such as adobe / autodesk / microsoft) applications we didn't hit one.

Is this really such a big-problem in reality? Any examples?

The problem with WIndows 7 is running older Microsoft apps, such as IEv6 on these desktops. You need something else. Two products that I have tried are InstallFree 7Bridge and Symantec Workplace Virtualization. Both allow you to have virtual apps, such as IEv6 or older Microsoft software that run on your Win7 desktop. You can see both products demonstrated at http://webinformant.tv with short videos.

Just wait until SSMSE 2008 starts getting memory hungry on Win7. It gets into these moods where it eats whole Gig's, and becomes largely unresponsive. This usually happens around the time that you need a millisecond response from your latest query online for the presentation you're doing. MS has acknowledged that there are "issues" but I haven't been able to figure out how to use the installer to UPDATE my installation yet.
